The chapter opens in the middle of the night at the Hong Kong International Airport. We are introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Lin, who are on their way to meet the president of China. We learn that Mr. Lin's wife, Madame Cai, is also on her way to see the president. We also learn that Madame Cai's husband, the vice-president, is on his way to the city as well.
