This chapter opens with a conversation between a young woman and a young man. The young man asks the young woman why she is alone, and the woman replies that she believes in destiny. She tells the young man that she met with another member of the family, and that she found a book in which the woman wrote that she had nothing to do, but that she did not want to be a part of their lives. The woman tells him that the family wants to be close to them, especially those with low status. She says that she would like to leave the family one day, but she thinks that there is a kind of destiny that would allow her to do so. She asks him what is on his mind, and he replies that he does not need to act. He tells her that he is drunk, and she tells him to be careful, as he is trying to irritate her
