The narrator introduces us to a new character named "Yin xi" . He's a translator, and he's here to tell us that he just met a guy named "Mr. White" in a hotel lobby. The guy's name is Mr. White, and this is the guy who's going to be taking care of all the business at the hotel. The narrator asks the guy if he'll treat him to coffee, and the guy says yes, and they're going to have a nice cup of coffee together. He also tells the narrator that he doesn't have any other women in his life, so he can do whatever he wants with the hotel business. The two of them go off to have coffee together, and then the narrator asks if he can be her guide. The man says no, but the narrator can't believe that the guy is so easygoing, and that he has to turn down all of his requests to be with the guy. He tells the guy that he is his "pet," and that's why he loves her so much. He asks her why she's so close to him, and she tells him that she was touched by him, but that she can tell the "deep love and nostalgia" in the man's eyes. She asks if the guy wants to kiss her, but he won't say anything. She's frozen, so she asks if she needs help. He says that all seats are taken, but there's only one reserved seat left, and it's in the French part of town, so the guy has to take a seat there. The woman who ordered the seafood platter that the narrator ordered is pregnant, and so the narrator didn't want her to eat too much, because she was pregnant. She says that the woman is like her in other ways, but she'll be similar to the narrator in other aspects.
