Wood wonders if the town is ruled by the "ill pentusive crimson serpent," and he wonders if Wood's sister has been eaten by the snake. He wonders if she has become a sacrifice for the serpent, and Wood wonders whether she has been trapped in the mud by the giant snake. They talk about the town's inhabitants, who seem to be getting more and more aggressive. Wood says that he has not had a satisfying "roaring" for the kingdom since the full moon.
