He goes to grab the crack, but Hawdon thinks he's in the wrong place at the wrong time. He wonders if it's because Hawdon's sister is about to be murdered. The sound of the ground cracks reminds Hawdon of a coffin, and he wonders if someone is moving the coffin. He also wonders if the coffin is being used for a funeral procession. He thinks that's just the way it is, and wonders if Hawdon should cut the coffin out with some malicious jokes. He says that the supplies for the bridge will arrive in thirteen days, and Hawdon wonders if this is some kind of conspiracy to build a bridge over the River Styx.
