About This Chapter
In the second half of the second game, Shuji asks the coach if he wants to make him a sub. Shuji says he doesn't know, but he's sure the coach just wanted to get rid of him. The coach tells Shuji that he can't do that, because he'll have to play against almost all the starters in the league. He also says that if Shuji wants to win, he needs to beat the starters and win some league games. But Shuji points out that this isn't going to happen, because there are no easy games in the regular season. The only way to do that is to win the league games, which is what he wants. He's also worried that Shuji is going to try to make the subs play like they're pros, which will only make them even less effective in the games they play. He argues that the subs are better than the starters because they have the "right weapon" , which Shuji calls the "man defense." Shuji argues that if he were to hurt Shuji, it would be a good thing, because Shuji would be able to take him on and make him pay for it. He says Shuji should attack the other side of the field and defend, because the other team is coming, and Shuji knows Shuji has a spot open in the middle of the pitch, which he can use to his advantage. He asks Shuji why Shuji missed his chance to play in the first half, because it's Shuji's job to keep the team composed and focused on winning the game, not the other way around. He points to Shuji as the only one who can keep up with the pace of the team, so Shuji tells the other players not to chase after them, even if the team has the ball, because they want to tire the team out. He tells them to keep defending their zones, and they'll be okay.
