He's bummed that he didn't get to go on the field trip with the other students, but he's also bummed that the school doesn't seem to have much to offer him. He thinks that the students are playing a game of cards instead of going on a real field trip. He also thinks that they're eating too much spice on their food. The narrator's not happy with the food either. He can't believe that the boys are eating fish instead of vegetables. He wonders why it's so cold in the school's cold rooms. The other students seem to be betting on the hot weather to make up for the lack of fresh air.
