About This Chapter
One day, when she's on her way to pick up her sister from a dance lesson, she runs into a man who's talking to her about his family, his job, and his friends. She wants to know what's going on, so she asks him why he's there, and he tells her that he wants to see her sister, too. She's impressed by how honest he seems to be, and she wants to learn more about him. She asks him to tell her more about her, and when he does, she asks why he was there. He tells her all sorts of details about his life, and how his family and his job are just normal, everyday things. But after she started working, she realized that she was partially to blame, too, because she didn't like the idea of losing a friend over a silly thing like that. So she asked him to teach her how to read and write, so that she could catch up on her schoolwork. He taught her to speak her mind, using her own words, and that's how she learned to read, write, and speak arithmetic. She admits that she wasn't as smart as she thought she could be, but she was still smart enough to learn how to do things right. She also admits that her parents were right to treat her like an adult, and so she became pregnant with the man's child.
