The narrator wakes up in the middle of the night. He's on a three- to one-rice-and-porridge-strained-food diet, and he's been told that his roommate has lost a lot of weight. The narrator is sorry to hear that, but he doesn't have to worry about it anymore. He tells the narrator that he was too busy teaching homeroom to stop. He also tells her that she's anemic, which is a fancy way of saying she has a bad case of cold feet. She tells him that it's hard for her to control her emotions, because she can't figure out how to control chiaki's "weird power" to attract people. She also tells him the story of how she and Hiroyuki saved each other, and how they were worried for each other. She says that she wants to know how she will bear the fate she has chosen, and she asks if she can still go back to school to get her diploma. She's not alone, she says, and even back when she thought she had to do all the work herself, she has people who accept her.
