The chapter opens with a description of the shopping scene. The narrator tells us that the scene is set in the summer, which is perfect for the characters because they can wear their summer clothes all day long. He tells the audience that he has just gotten a job as a part-timer and that the best thing to do is to go shopping with other guys. He says that he would rather be with his friends than with the girls in the crowd, who are wearing skimpy clothes. He adds that he just bought a shirt and skirt and that he is hungry. He wants to get away from the crowd so that he can look at the girls. He asks if they are with their girl friends, but they refuse to listen to him. He then tells them that he and urabe are going out on a date and that they can go on the date without him. They can all go out on double dates, he says, since it is not often that they meet up outside of school. He also says that his friend Urasue has told him that he looks cheerful when he is out with his friend. He suggests that they all go to the beach together.
