About This Chapter
It's snowing hard in the town where the narrator lives. He's been to the public bath house, and the smell of it makes him want to go home, but he can't because he's crying. The narrator tells us that he went out with a guy in high school who went to college and hasn't seen him since. He says that the guy was the first person he ever dated, and that he and the narrator are always special because they're the only two people in the world who've ever been together. He also says that he is going out with his younger brother, Tsubaki, who's 21 years old. He asks the narrator to be good to him, but the narrator doesn't want to be the first to ask, so he says he'll just ask his brother. He tells the narrator that the snow's getting heavier, and he wonders if he can get home. He remembers when he was a little boy, when he and his brother would wake up in the middle of the night to play in the snow. One morning, he remembers, he said, "I'm first!" , and it made him happy. Now, he says, he'd like to be first to leave his footprints on his brother's sister.
