It's Christmas Eve, and the lights on the Christmas tree are still on, but it doesn't seem to be working at all. The narrator tells us that the tree was bought by his mother, and that his sister tries to use it every year. He says that he wishes he could spend Christmas Eve with his family, but that he'll have to wait until after his family is together again. He's going to go out for a while, so he's not sure if the lights are on or not. When he gets back, he finds out that the lights aren't on at all, but the tree is still working. He asks if his sister can try it out, but she can't, because she's wearing a Santa outfit. He thinks it's a gift from his mother in heaven, and he feels like it was just a present.
