In this chapter, we are introduced to Mr. Ganymede and his first wife, Madame Bonafiore. The two of them are in a public place, and Mr. Guppy is trying to get his wife to give him a kiss. He is very upset, because he has lost his first love, and he wants to get back to her immediately. He tells his wife that he is gambling with his career, and that she should go home with him. She tells him that she has not yet agreed to go with him, but he tells her that he does not want her to stand in his way of his career. He says that he will never let her stand against him in the future. He then goes on to explain that he has come to the house every day to do some cleaning, in case he is not able to come back. He wants to know if there are any other things in the house besides the money and the kitchen set. He asks her if she wants to keep him in her house, while he is with his childhood sweetheart. She says that she did not want to come to him when he heard that he wanted to divorce her, because she was busy with other things. She asks him if he would please tell her everything, and if she would have any questions. She then asks him what he is thinking about. He replies that he hasnt finished his story he told her that day, and it is totally unexpected that he would meet her in the same place and place.
