About This Chapter
The monk, fuji, tells the others that he is going to be a monk because a woman rejected him. He says that he has not yet become a monk, but that he plans to do so in the future. The monk asks if he is really going to become one, and the man replies that he already knows how to be one. He then asks if the monk is really just going to marry a woman who rejected him, but the monk replies that the woman is not going to reject him, because she rejected him anyway. This is a reference to an anime called "pikkyu" from 1975-1982, in which the protagonist is described as a monk who opens his eyes and acts as if he were a monk. The protagonist asks the monk if he really wants to become a Buddhist monk, to which the monk responds that the protagonist already has the basic skills of becoming a monk: he has memorized how to open his eyes, and he has learned how to act like a monk in order to please others. The Buddhist monk then asks the protagonist if he has heard that monks are popular, and that the buddhist school of Buddhism was born out of the popularity of the monks. The buddhists, the monk says, are not popular, because they don't know what they're talking about. He also says that the monks practice a "rare process of self-mification" , which means that if things continue as they are now, he's going to end up marrying a nun, and this is the end of the world for him. This means that he'll turn into a "lifelonger-virgin shut-in," and that he won't have anything to do with his life. The Buddha, he says, kind of ticks him off, and so he says go for it.
