About This Chapter
In this short scene, we meet the protagonist, who is in the middle of a conversation with his friend, the protagonist's wife. The two men are planning to meet at turtle stones in the town of Kamao-gawa at 3:00 p.m. The protagonist wants to know why his wife has not responded to his proposal of marriage. He asks his friend to listen to the captain of the group, who tells him that his wife is on her way to the holy land of kyo-ani , which means "the land of the living." The protagonist, however, is not interested in listening to what the captain has to say. Instead, he wants to ask his wife out on a field trip, which he thinks will lead to a marriage. The conversation is interrupted by the arrival of the captain, who informs the protagonist that he has arrived at the river, which is called the kanogawa. The captain asks the protagonist what he is doing there, and the protagonist replies that he is on his way to meet his wife. He then asks the captain what he should do now that his "highness" is at its peak. He tells the captain that he should check to see whether he still has all his teeth, but the captain responds that he does not look at him, but rather, he looks at him and asks him what he would like to do now. He says that he will go ask her to come with him to the turtle stones, and then they will meet again at 3:00 at the same place. When the captain asks if the protagonist is really there, he replies that the protagonist must have come, and that he did not bother to invite his wife to the field trip. He wonders if she is fed up with him since he pressed the issue so much. The
