We learn that Madame Bovary's husband hated her because she was responsible for the downfall of the Ming family, and that she was blamed for all of the misfortunes in the past. She tells us that she is grateful that she has been able to live a peaceful and happy life in the face of so much persecution. She says that she will not be a burden to her husband, but that he must protect her.
