This chapter opens with a description of a ditch with a reservoir in it. The narrator tells us that this ditch is the first time he's ever seen such a structure, and that it's going to be used for irrigation. He also tells us about the man who's been guarding the area for years, Prince zhenxi, and how he'll be able to help out with the project. Yimo is all, "Gee, that's a good idea" . He's even more excited when he sees that the jacket is made out of a special material that'll protect him from the dangers of the northwest. He tells his father to take the jacket and keep it for himself. He was poisoned three months ago, he fell from a horse in a class, and he was prodded by a sword in sword-fighting. He wants to be back soon, but his father won't let him. He warns him to be careful with young girls in the future, because they're going to turn out to be promiscuous.
