About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a discussion between Asuka and Mutsu. Asuka asks Mutsu how long it has been since they left the island. Mutsu replies that it's been a month since the field trip, and he wonders if they should be "celebrating" the fact that they've been gone so long. He also asks if they can escape on a raft, but Mutsu disagrees, saying that the ocean is too dangerous for them to stay on it. He adds that if they ran into a storm, they would be gone for sure, but if they got sick or injured, they'd have to worry about that too. He doesn't think they should worry too much about escaping the island, though, because they're only here for a short period of time, and they don't want to get sick or get seriously injured. But Mutsu points out that the bullet he shot through a deer's lung wasn't fatal, and that wild deer can move around in this condition for "at least twenty minutes" . He's not sure if he should have aimed for its head or body, but he knows that he's on the island for the long haul, so he'll help.
