Soji and his older brother have been raised by their mother alone. Soji remembers that his father was an "awful guy" and that he swore that he would never cry because he was a nice man. They look around for food and find no edible fruit or shellfish. They decide to go back to the mainland to look for something to eat. They find an abalone and eat it, which is the first food they have eaten in a long time.
