About This Chapter
In this chapter, Huck and the others discuss what they'll take from the desert island. Huck says he's going to make a roof out of the roof of the shelter and attach it to the frame of the boat. He doesn't want to leave the roof on the island because it's too big for the boat, but he also says that if the boat were even larger, it would just wear them out. They decide to pack everything they need and leave the island for a few days. They're afraid of losing the salt, but they decide to split the salt into two batches so that if it rains, they won't have to worry about it. Huck wonders if there's anything they might find in the ocean that would keep them from running out into the ocean. He's not worried about sea turtles, though, because they don't seem to have any. Huck is excited to see how much food they've got. He makes a net out of rabbit and boar hides and stuffs it with acorn starch, katakuri starch, acorn resin, pine resin, pots and pans, beeswax candles, and rabbit hides. He thinks it looks like a fire-starting tool. He also makes a black powder out of soot, potassium carbonate, and sulfur. Huck's excited to be alone on an island.
