In this chapter, the girls discuss their plan to catch a boar. They decide to use a spring-pole snare to trap the boar, but the girls are bored with the idea. They wonder if they should use a baited pole snare instead, but Mutsu points out that it would be a waste of their time and money. The girls decide that they will have to fight boredom in order to survive on the island. Mutsu suggests that they use morse code to communicate with each other. They use mirrors to change the length of the sounds they make, and then they use a plant called purslane to make soy sauce.
