Five years have passed since the Marshall Islands were attacked by a powerful storm, and Tommo and his family are now marooned on the seacoast. Tommo wonders why they haven't been able to find a way to get back to the mainland, but Tommo assures him that they'll be able to do it. He also tells Tommo that he's going to give his daughter, Yon, a present on her birthday, since she'll need to spend the day on the island.
