About This Chapter
The next morning, the sea woman wonders what's going on. She's not sure if it's a dream or a reality, but she does know that she's in a weird place. She thanks the one who made the proto-dare, which is a kind of meditation device, for making it possible for her to stay in touch with the real world. The sea woman thanks the man who made it, too. He's worried about the habit director, who's always worried about how people will react to the new world. She tells the man to stay away from her, because she doesn't want her to slip back into the old world. He says he'll be back soon. The woman thanks him, too, and tells him to stay out of her way. She also tells him not to worry about the family, because they're all going to get back together soon. She says they'll just have to wait and see what happens. She wonders why Enjin is so mad about the head family, and wonders if he's really mad at the whole family. Enjin, she says, is obsessed with the idea that people will respond to a given thing differently than they would if they didn't have to respond to it at all. She thinks Enjin's obsession with the family might be driven by resentment, and she wonders if Enjin might be mad at his kid for being half-demon and half-man. She hopes that she can get her sister back to the mainland.
