The next morning, Murasaki and Todano discuss the situation. Murasaki says that his father has suggested that he be more cautious in his dealings with the people of Japan, but Murasaki disagrees, saying that he has always acted in a manner that pleases his father. He says that he will hold up his end of the bargain if he is needed, and that he is glad to see that he looks well. He asks about the new anti-demon barrier, and the two men discuss whether or not they will be able to keep their hair from growing out. They both agree that it is impossible for them to keep the hair in place, and Murasaki asks if they have been drinking, and they agree that they have. They discuss the fact that the repre- sentative has not yet been sent to them, but that they are beginning to get along. They wonder if it is strange that it has not been sent yet, and when Murasaki points out that the leg-end of the country is home to fewer such legends, they conclude that it must be true.
