About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a soliloquy in which the narrator laments the fact that he has been left behind in the midst of a "rush" of people. He decides to clean up the place while everyone else has gone, and then he decides to wait until the wolves have left. He realizes that if the wolves attack the town, he will lose, but if they don't attack him, he'll be eaten by the wolves. He also realizes that the wolves and the town are "en emies" , meaning that if they are attacked, they will both be killed. The narrator then tells us that the wolf has reached the fourth street inter-sec squad six, and that he's been shot at from a blind spot. He's also been able to hide in the shadows, which gives him "a sense of security" . They have two options: they can either attack the wolves on the moon, or they can attack them on the roof. They'll either have to do something with the moon or they'll have to attack them alone. They decide to attack the wolf alone, because the moon gives the wolf a sense of safety. They also decide to use the moon as a cover, since it's a full moon tonight. As the moon rises, the narrator swears that the town is "just full of frienders," and that they're "just fine." He also says that he thinks the wolves are stronger than the men in the town because of their "adaptation powers" to living among the wild. He adds that the only difference between the two men is that the men have the ability to "sniff out blood wild," "smell out lust," and "read the current for thought and vision." The narrator
