The chapter opens with a group of young people discussing their plans for the future. They're all planning to go to college together, and they've all decided that they'd like to do some card games together. One of the young people, Juri, tells the others that he's going to pick a card from one of the juniors and play it with them. The other young people agree that it's a good idea, and Juri tells them that his dad taught him how to play cards when he was a little kid. The young people talk about how nice it is to live in a nice city like New York. Juri asks if they all hate the city, and the other young men agree that they do. They all agree that the city is just a "dead how this end" , but Juri says that he still loves it, even though it has its "weirdness" . He tells the young men that he grew up in New York, and that he likes things that are "reliable and orderly," even though they're "weird" and "disgusting." He's leaving the city because he wants to "change this town." He tells them he'll be joining a doctor, joining a police officer, and going to work as a scientist. He asks Juri to take him to a nearby hospital, where he can get some sleep.
