In this chapter, we learn that Knight Wolsey has lost all of his legs, and that he is now in the process of losing them as well. He is worried that he will never reach the future, but he is not worried about the future of the world he is in. Wolsey tells us that he has been waiting for his opponent to arrive from the sea, so he can have a spectacle to put on for the audience. He tells the audience that the game they will be playing is a kind of shooting game, like a game of cards or billiards. In the old days, shooting games meant that you would dodge enemy fire, but in the new days, it means that you have to shoot at enemies in order to get a shot at them. In other words, Wolsey is saying that his ether bullets are not going to work, because they are too fast. He explains that he can use his signal jammers to block all of the signals in the city.
