In this chapter, Lyra tells the audience that she is about to perform a show in which she will hypnotize the audience. She tells them that the show will take place in a war-torn part of the world, and that she wants to give the audience something to cheer them up before the show begins. She then hypnotizes Lyra and tells her that she can do whatever she wants with the other characters in the show. When Lyra wakes up, she tells him that he is a loyal dog and that he will be able to do whatever he wants when he gets to the venue
