The narrator is worried that she'll get hit on again, and he asks if the boss will hire him. The boss says no, but he promises to hire him if the narrator will pay him. He says he'd like to hire the narrator if he has a job, but that's not something he can do without a job. The professor is a slave driver, so the narrator has to work extra hours to make ends meet. When he gets home, he eats jelly from work, but it's too late for him to eat it with the professor. He wonders if the professor and the slave driver are getting along, and wonders if he could be in trouble if he saw the two of them together.
