He hears from his mom that she's planning to go abroad, and he's shocked. He doesn't want her to go to study abroad, he says, because it'll be a waste of his time and money. He tells her that he supports her and wants her to keep moving forward in her career. She's so shocked that she starts to cry. The narrator asks her why she was so mad, and she tells him that she was just trying to cheer her up after she got back from abroad. She also tells the narrator that she has known him longer than he has, and that he has known her longer than she has. She asks him if he knows that she told her not to go study abroad because she wanted to be apart. He says no, and then he tells her he plans to turn down the job because he wants to be closer to her. He also tells her to treat him to some cake at the campus cafe.
