In this chapter, we are told that the gods are no longer able to rule over the earth because they have lost their ability to control the flow of life in the ancient land. The only way to gain access to the land is to use brute force, and the only ones who can do so are those who have the most brute force. The elder and the fan have both agreed that they will climb the mountain together, but the elder warns the fan not to be too enthusiastic about his abilities. He tells the fan that if he disobeys them, he will be killed, and that the outcome will be the same.
