The chapter ends with a tearful goodbye between Duan de and the taoist, who has stolen all of Duan's possessions. Duan says that he is sorry that he did not keep his promise to Duan, but that he will repay him in the future. He tells Duan that his name is Duan-de, and that if destiny allows, they will meet again.
