In this chapter, the Time Traveller tells us that he has been waiting for someone to come back from the dead. He's been trapped in this time machine for so long that he can't even remember the person he's waiting for. The Time Traveller explains that something went wrong when he was trying to travel back in time, and that the person who was supposed to be with him never came back. He says that he knows that the other person is lying to him, but that he isn't just lying to her, but to the eternal laws of time and space. He promises to cheat death and return to them when the time is right.
