About This Chapter
The chapter opens with a description of the destruction of the old city of Machida. The narrator tells us that the city has been "blasted below 20 percent lant" , and that the "IJF is made of such a handful" that it's hard to tell how many of the city's inhabitants are still alive. He says that he's glad that the IJF is still alive, because he thinks that they might have been given new bodies. He also says that the injured soldiers in his unit are all alive, but that he can't tell them anything. He tells the narrator to come to him and tell him what's happened. He wants to know what happened to his injured comrades, and he says that if he doesn't improve, he'll be unable to protect anything anymore. He goes on to say that the only fully-operational battalion left on the base is lieutenant Tsukyomi's, who's still asleep. He's going to look for a "roger" to check on his troops, and says that they'll have to go to the hangar to check. He adds that he knows that the loss of so many of his men will be felt throughout the world, but he also knows that there will be no one left to mourn those who have been killed. He asks the narrator if he managed to single-handedly break through enemy lines, and the narrator replies that he did, but there are more chief soldiers than there are chief lieutenants. He points out that they were able to do so because they were fighting as hard as they did, and they protected their home. They have a meeting at 2100 to decide what to do next, but the narrator says that at times like this, they've lost so much that they don't know how to react.
