About This Chapter
Hirokazu asks why he's there, and the lieutenant tells him that he wants to meet the "real" objective of the war, which is to kill as many enemy soldiers as possible. The lieutenant says that he has been on a secret mission for a week, and that the paper has already been cleared of any wrongdoing. He says he'll go back to row with the rest of the men, and he thanks the lieutenant for putting him in his place. He's grateful that he can still be a part of the unit, and says that his hand is sore from the battle, so he can't risk dying just yet. He thanks his lieutenant for making him feel like he can do some good things, and thanks him for being so kind to him. The other lieutenants chime in, saying that they're in the same situation, too. They're just not as well-staffed as they used to be, but they still have high-risk missions to go on. They all feel sorry for the death of their mentor, and it's their duty as survivors to use what they've learned to save the lives of as many people as possible
