In this chapter, the young narrator tries to make sense of the events of the previous day. He wonders if he's been to war before, and he wonders if it's a dream of his old life. He thinks that the new generation of soldiers is going to be even more useful than expected. He's thankful for this, but he doesn't know if it will be a good thing or a bad one. He also wonders if the young people will be able to learn from the mistakes of the past. He says that he can't forgive Captain Sagi for killing his career. After the Battle of Iwo Jima, he says, Sagi tried everything to rebuild Japan. When the country was under attack by the German, he rose up and revealed the US's plans. Even when Sagi was called a traitor, he was still prepared to sacrifice himself for the sake of the greater good. He wants to be a bigger person, like the Prime Minister's daughter.
