The next morning, the group is still in the middle of the battle, and the captain asks the other soldiers if they need backup. The captain says that he's not sure if he'll ever be able to go back to Japan. He also says that they're being used as "meat shields" by the enemy, and that the only way to stop them is to use the beta laser. He tells the captain that the class 5,000 ahead of them has already lost many battles because they each fought "out of self interest." The captain tells the others that he forgives his past self, and thanks them all for their kindness. He then asks the lieutenant what he thinks of Yuuko's testimony. The lieutenant says that she was "an exceptional soldier" and that he can't get him to give up on him yet. The Captain says that Yuuko was the greatest contribution to the battle that he could have made today. He says that people who need "something to cling to" are "the most dangerous" and should be kept in check.
