The chapter opens with a request from the First Lieutenant to the rest of the squadron to participate in the exercise, which has been canceled. The First Lieutenant tells the other pilots that the exercise was supposed to be a rehearsal for the actual battle, and that they should use it to prepare for battle. The Second Lieutenant disagrees, saying that the Second Lieutenant is treating the pilots like total idiots. He tells them to go to the nearest hangar and wait for the weapons they need. He says that he will administer a sedative to the pilots so that they will not die. He then tells them that he still needs them, and asks them to leave him alone so that he can see them again. They do so, and he says that it was "dumb luck" that caused him to get so full of himself, thinking that he could save humanity. He starts spraying the pilots with paintballs, and then he starts screaming how he is going to kill them all. He also says that his first battle was "a complete disaster" and that he let all of his men die. After spending a while with the training corps, the Imperial forces sent him to help fill in the ranks at the new base. The chapter ends with him saying that he does not know how to put this behind him.
