Princess Maid

The scene opens with a soliloquy by Sophia, in which she laments the fact that she has been tricked into thinking that she is dying. She tells the story of how she saw roses blooming in the thorn bushes and how she would have stopped and smelled them if she had known that she was dying. The scene ends with a flourish of music, and the audience is left to wonder what will happen next.
