This chapter opens with a flashback to the events of the previous chapter. In this chapter, we are introduced to a young man who has just graduated from college and is about to enter the world of business. He has just received a letter from his employer stating that he is on a "retreat" and that he has not yet been accepted at his "preferred" job. The young man, whose name is Miles, is furious with his employer for not offering him a job. He is also furious with himself for not having the nerve to ask for more money and power when he has been offered a job that pays him less than the minimum wage. Miles is determined to make his employer disappear, and he has set out to do so.
