That's right, the narrator says, the wedding will be canceled because "the word had gotten around." Ouch. The narrator says that he's not surprised, because he thinks that the two of them went through a "little restructuring" in their relationship. He's also not surprised that she's "a dolt" , since he thinks she was once in love with her first love. He says that she "strikes the perfect balance" between romance and highness . He also says that the five years that have passed since the last time he saw her have been "in the blink of eye," and that she hasn't "gotten anything at all" in the way of "high-maintenance girls" like herself. He compares her to a "high school girl" who has a crush on a teacher. She's the only one she'd ever open up to, he says, because she has "mood - wise" and "weight wise" ; she'll always have "ups and downs" in her life. He adds that she sent him a text message to let him know that she was going to be at the party, so that he could make sure she was ready to go. He asks if she thought of herself as 27 for "14 whole volumes," and she says "practically 30."
