About This Chapter
The narrator tells us that he's moved back in with Buchou, the house keeper, after his mother cut him off from a "term deposit arrangement" when he was younger. He's not happy about that, though, because he thinks that Buchou will be lonely in the city until he retires. The narrator says he'll assess his income this week and figure out his monthly salary. He says that he doesn't want to be indebted to anyone, so he figures that if he makes 100 yen off each point deducted, he might be able to pay back some of his debt. He also says that if his income drops below zero, he'd like to see if he can get a job as a housekeeper. He figures that he might have to give up a few things, like his clothes, to make up for it. He tells us, "I'm going on a week's worth of salary assessment and figuring out how much I'll owe you." The narrator is all, "Oh, no, I'm not going to do that." He says he never thought of Buchou as anything but a woman, and that every thing he does makes him hate her more. He adds that she's a "lovergirl," and that she is "bittersweet" because of her circum stances. She's got a visitor, he says, and she is feminine, too. He goes on to say that every time he thinks of her as feminine, he feels like he has to go and buy a new suit for her. He wants to buy her a simple one-piece suit, but he can't bear the thought of giving up his old clothes. He asks if he should go buy back the jacket he bought for her, but she says that she hasn't yet. She adds that the jacket cost about 13,000 yen, which is more than enough to cover the cost of the suit. She says she'll buy the jacket back if it's still in good condition. She also says she hasnt given up any of her old clothes yet, but that she has to get rid of some of them. She then says that, once she figured this out, it seemed like the best thing to do. She moves back into the house with Buchu, and the narrator says that it was only after he figured out that he had a conflict with his
