The first scene opens with a conversation between a young man and an older man. The young man tells the older man that he once worked for a furniture designer named Teshima, who is now an interior designer. The younger man tells Teshima that he has seen a woman at a convenience store whom he has never seen before. Teshima tells the young man that the woman is very old, and that she seems to be buying cup noodles, candy, and beer. He asks Teshima to write an article about the woman, and Teshima promises to do so. The two men begin to get along very well, and the younger man is impressed by Teshima's gentle nature. He tells him that he heard a lot of good things about Teshima back in London, and he asks why Teshima does not tell him the woman he chose to work for is the same woman he saw at the convenience store. The older man replies that he could swear he had seen the woman before. He then asks why the owner of the salon wants Teshima and the other men to make the salon more accessible to the common people. When Teshima says that the owner wants them to develop a "concept," the young men reply that they should develop a concept that satisfies the owner's need for relaxation and convenience. They then begin to discuss the woman they have just seen, and they both agree that she is dressed like a child, like Teshima. They both know that Teshima has been dealing with complaints about the work he has been doing, and it is more to relax than to cater to the needs of young people.
