This chapter opens with a soliloquy by Colonel Kobayashi. He tells us that he has been ordered by his superior to form a special anti-defiance unit. He explains that he had planned to select a few elite men to form the unit, but that his superior had told him to put on the uniforms of the anti-Defiance. He says that the men had no intention of actually using the unit. Colonel Kobayashi tells him that he himself has sent many men to hell for his actions, but he doesn't regret it. He asks if he is a demi human, and he replies that he is. He then asks if the men are getting ready for the battle. They are, and they are. He reminds them that even demi humans will die when they are in their 50s. He gives them a ride to the train station.
