Miss Betsey is leaving for work, and she tells Miss Jessel that Mr. Roberts is upset that she's pregnant and that he wants to give her a present. Miss Jessels response is that he thought she'd be happy being pregnant, so he'd give her something that would make her happy and make her proud. This time, however, he's not so happy about giving her a gift that'll make her feel proud. He's upset about the fact that the gift is so young and so thoughtful, and that she doesn't seem to know that down on her father.
