The next morning, Dr. Rivers is worried about his wife's health. He's worried that someone in the family is in debt and that they're going to make her a cripple. He asks the butler if he can give him a call if Violet comes back. The butler tells Rivers that his wife is home all day and that he'll tell Violet to take care of her health. Rivers tells the butler that he doesn't have a way to find Violet. He thinks that she's going to do something silly to get money. He says that if he'd come earlier, he might have already resolved all of her problems. He also says that he thinks that he has a strong relationship with violet because he's the one who's in charge. Violet's reason for wanting to be friends with him is that she wants to make sure that he gets a post in the medical field after he graduates from medical school. But, he says, if he didn't get her a job, their friendship would end. He notices that Violet is staring at hazel when she and anna were at the villa the last time they were there for dinner. He wants to remind her that she looks complicated when she looks at him.
