The chapter opens on the day after the wedding of Aaron and Jessica. The narrator tells us that she and her husband are "not really a family" . She says that she doesn't mind that people think they're a family because she sees her son as her child. She also says that Jessica is trying to seduce her husband. She tells him that she's sorry that he fell for someone so different from her. She adds that there are many women who would love to be married to him, but she won't be able to do so because she isn't compatible with him. He tells her that he's just richer, a little better looking, and a little taller than the other men. He says that he likes to read, and one of his favorite books is an architect's book about his life and his work. Jessica says that her father was an architect, but that he went astray when he married her mother. She asks him if he took one of her books, and he says he just read them.
