The narrator tells us that he's going to check out the cheng family's background to make sure that little Em'ly isn't a "mystery child" . He's also going to call on her mother-in-law, who's in town for her son's birthday. He wants to know why she's hanging out with her husband and son, and why she doesn't seem to be having a good time. He tells her to calm down, and he'll give her son a call and ask him to prepare a fancy birthday party for her. He also tells him to be mentally prepared, because his assistant already told him about her birthday a week ago. He promises to make her a nice dinner tonight, and they'll bake a cake together.
