The final night before he is to be executed, Victor is sentenced to serve thirteen years in prison for his crime. He tells the warden that he has spent the past four-and-a-half years in this prison, and that his crime has "rotten the bonds" of his friends. He asks the warden why he committed the crime, and the warden tells him that he should not have killed anyone.
