In the liquor store, gyori greets his son, who is returning from a fight. He tells him not to push himself too hard, as he will hurt his back again. . He reminds him that he is becoming an adult, and that his mother is getting less cheer. He says that he expects him to be a good human being, no matter who he is. He asks if he got into a fight that day, and he says that it was not a good fight, because he was not smart enough to know what he was talking about. He also says that his life is not worth anything, since he is only "i'm only" , and slaps him for saying such a thing. He goes on to say that if he leaves tonight, dinner will be ready, and if he returns tomorrow, it will happen again. He orders a hiyashi chake with miso soup, which he says is a weird combination of wheat gluten and miso soup. He then asks his mother if she likes it, and she says that she does, as long as he feels a bit better. She then asks him if he would have done the same thing if he had been a kid. He replies that he would not have done it, but he blushes.
